There is a certain amount of lore surrounding the panettone’s origins, and not much fact. It is known that the bread was first produced in Milan, in the northern region of Lombardy, probably during the Middle Ages, and one story suggests that the domed bread was an homage to the domed churches of the region. The expensive ingredients required to create the enriched dough — eggs and butter — meant that it was reserved for the holidays, and mostly available only to nobility.
Plenty of people have devised ways of getting around using a machine; plenty of people made ice cream before the machine was invented. The cookbook author and pastry chef David Lebovitz suggests putting your base straight into the freezer and then taking it out, every thirty minutes or so, for a good stir. Faith Durand, the editor of The Kitchn, fills a mixing bowl with ice and salt, nestles a smaller bowl inside it, then churns her base in the small bowl with a hand mixer, before freezing the whole thing. (Thomas Jefferson, an ice-cream fiend, used a similar approach.) The food-science whiz J. Kenji Lopez-Alt has a recipe that involves making a custard, combining it with fresh-whipped cream, freezing the mixture in ice-cube trays, and then food-processing the frozen cubes with more cream; it’s perfect for anyone who cares about getting her “overrun all the way down to 24%.” The popular “no-churn” technique, perhaps easiest of all, calls for a quart of heavy cream, whipped into soft peaks, and a can of condensed milk, poured into a loaf pan and left to freeze—though, as Lopez-Alt points out, this is really more of a mousse, as smooth as ice cream but with an airier, chewier texture that will be familiar to anyone who has ever enjoyed a frozen container of Cool Whip. In my mind, none of these beats the spontaneity, humble materials, and built-in upper-body workout of the plastic-bag method. It has all the appeal of a magic trick, although of course it’s not—just simple science, taking place before your very eyes. (My friend, it turned out, learned it in elementary school.)

Most of the work was completed over the weekend by university crews at the 168 buildings on campus, he said. Hallway water fountains and stand-alone ice machines have been put back into service. "Housing and dining (employees) have taken care of all the things they were going to do," Johnson said.
The first ones to try were a writer named Alan Wenkus and documentarian named S. Leigh Savidge. They began writing a Straight Outta Compton screenplay together in 2002, focusing mostly on Eazy-E’s story, got Woods-Wright to sign on and sold it to New Line in 2006. Cube joined the project in 2007 as a producer, but wanted the character based on his life to have a bigger role in the plot (naturally). Cube hired a new writer (Andrea Berloff, who wrote Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center), brought Dre aboard and turned it into a drama with three equal leads — Eazy-E, Dre and himself. (DJ Yella and MC Ren, the fourth and fifth members of the group, are in the film but only as peripheral characters.) F. Gary Gray, director of The Italian Job — and a South Central native who had been collaborating with Cube since his 1991 solo video "True to the Game" — was hired to direct. It looked for sure as if a green light was imminent.
Ice Cube’s son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., plays his rap star dad (picture here in his younger days) in the film.
"Ice Cube has a keen eye for design and gave great feedback throughout the entire year-long process of its creation," says Carolyn Rafaelian. "His passion for the details was truly inspiring and mirrored his dedication to the League. We are excited to sponsor the BIG3 which we believe reflects the values of ALEX AND ANI and our customers."
