That changed — somewhat — Thursday night when filmmaker Jeremy Garelick showed a tiny preview of three movies filmed in the Syracuse area over the past year. Garelick shared a 3-minute video featuring clips of "Banana Split," "Looks That Kill" and "Big Time Adolescence" at the Palace Theatre as part of the 2018 Syracuse International Film Festival.
“An ice bath is important because we want to cool down the mixture really fast.” That’s not just putting the mixture in the fridge, explains Bauer, “but cooling it down, because milk and sugar, when they come together, they can really grow not-great microbes, so you want to get it cooled down really quickly.” The best way to do that is to pour the hot ice-cream base into a heavy ziplock bag, then submerge it in the ice bath you’ve set up in that large mixing bowl. “It cools down in 15 or 20 minutes, so you can get it ready to freeze.”
Principal photography — with actual actors, not just the producers interviewing one another — began in August 2014 in Compton. "I haven’t lived in Compton for quite a while, but it felt great," says Dre, who was on the set as a producer nearly every day of the production. "Everybody was really excited about the fact that we were not only making a movie but making it in Compton. It feels like Compton is another character."

“Very often, it’s the one we give the least attention to,” he says. “Whether that water is coming out of your tap, or it’s coming in the form of pebbles, whether your dilution is coming from a blender or from shaking, it’s all going to have a direct impact on the quality and integrity of the cocktail when you’re done.”
I went on to try numerous other recipes, including two from King Arthur Flour (good flavor but too dry) and Lahey’s recipe in “The Sullivan Street Bakery Cookbook,” which requires a specific starter. Rather than wait for a new starter to take hold, I substituted a starter that I have kept for several years and which I use mostly for pizza and focaccia. The resulting panettone was airy but had a distinct bready chewiness, which I attribute to my using the wrong kind of starter.
A judge recently declined to lower the $10 million bail for Knight (left) for the January slaying of a ‘Straight Outta Compton’ adviser near the set of a trailer for the movie. It was “a really tragic incident,” says Dre.
Garelick also apologized for not being able to show more of the movies at the event. The Syracuse film festival originally announced the event would include full screenings of "Banana Split" and "Looks That Kill," but they couldn’t be shown mainly due to legal restrictions from distributors.
An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the Disco Cubes at Botanica. They are served in a cocktail at the bar, not sold individually.
Hendricks didn’t have any medals to give out to the winners — gymnasts just throw them in a drawer anyway — but Gary Johnson, for reasons not fully explained, had purchased 1,000 anatomically correct hereford figurines which, it turns out, make swell gymnastic medals.
