What type of fridge freezer do you need? Fridge freezers come in multiple types. A traditional 60cm fridge freezer takes up the minimum amount of space and stacks the fridge on top of the freezer. A side-by-side model (also known as American style) have the fridge and freezer next to each other. You typically get a lot of space, but watch out for the overall size, since the latter models can be very deep.

At a dinner party I attended recently, when one of the hosts—an artist friend, who can be a little loopy—announced, as we cleared our plates of lamb tagine, that she was going to whip up some ice cream for dessert, I was skeptical. Making ice cream typically involves not only a machine but more than a day of preparation: you have to pre-chill the machine’s cannister overnight in the freezer, prepare your base—often a custard that you’ve cooked on the stovetop and let cool in the fridge—and then allow the machine to churn and freeze it for twenty minutes or so before putting it in the freezer for several hours to let it fully solidify.

This is an easy-to-use ice maker that makes new cubes from recycled water. There is a 10-minute wait for ice cubes to form, which some may see as a drawback, but it’s a great little appliance for RVs and other places where there’s no room for a full-size freezer. Because it’s not a freezer, however, the ice must be transferred somewhere else before it melts.

For Vavyrshko, this nog goes back to his roots. “This is an enhancement on pre-bottled eggnog that we drink quite a bit of in Pennsylvania, and it’s also where I got the idea to split the spirit base.” The nog uses brandy, rum and bourbon. “The other ingredient is a spiced syrup, which is essential in holiday and/or fall cocktails,” he added. “I like to use Homeland Creamery’s Eggnog; they do a fantastic job.”

As befits a premium A+ rated appliance, cooling is speedy, set temperatures accurate and temperature stability very good. Average fridge temperatures ranged from 5ºC at the top to 1ºC in the bottom drawer. The lowest shelf run at 3ºC and both salad crispers kept at around 2.5ºC. We couldn’t ask for better.

Compared to standalone machines, ice makers inside refrigerators produce much less ice (4 to 5 pounds per day). As a result, scale buildup is less of a problem. Standalone ice makers churn out multiple times that amount over the same period.
